Astral Residency

i/thee

I/thee is a family and friends design collaborative led by Kristina Fisher, Martin Hitch, and Neal Lucas Hitch. Their designs celebrate the co-sentience of everything in the environment; living and non-living; past and present; I and thee.

Where some wish to draw distinctions, i/thee wishes to shed light on what we all have in common: to demonstrate that the appearance of difference is an illusion. Within this universe, there are not many things but just one thing: one life, one love, one eternally temporary moment. The world is not made up of separate entities and forces that sometimes overlap; rather, all things are born from the same circle with one boundary—a perfectly overlapping venn diagram containing all there is.

i/thee will use the Astral Residency at Compound Yellow as a platform to generate speculative drawings and plans for future infrastructures to activate the Side Yard. Over the course of the residency, i/thee will meet with community members and work alongside neighborhood residents to imagine a catalog of possible developments designed/built from the bottom up. The final output of the residency will exist as a construction manual of tactical urban interventions proposed for the site.

Jorge Lucero will be conducting 20 interviews that will then take the form of a book produced by Compound Yellow and Conceptual Art & Teaching. The interviews will capture the urgencies that Compound Yellow concerns itself with, while at the same time offering ways of working and postures of thinking for creative practitioners worldwide.

Jorge Lucero is an artist, born and raised in Chicago. He currently serves as the Chair of Art Education at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His project Conceptual Art & Teaching aims to tease out the intersections of those two ways of being. Find out more at www.jorgelucero.com

About the astral residency

Our Astral Residency is our take on a virtual or international artist in residence. In these times of distance and digital connection, we designed our Astral residency as a way to invite our friends from across the globe to initiate digital and long-distance connective projects that influence our daily life at Compound Yellow.

Through online workshops, virtual performances, correspondence, and other projects, our Astral residents are charged with connecting the dots across space and expanding our conception of community. There are so many talented artists we wish could be here with us weekly at Compound Yellow, but because of the current precarity and risks involved with travel, we hope that this residency opens an opportunity for international artists to engage with our audience and enrich our seasonal programming.

Tiny Domingos

Hybrid Togetherness

Hybrid Togetherness was a participatory workshop series led by Berlin-based artist and researcher Tiny Domingos, Compound Yellow’s summer 2021 Astral resident. Starting on June 12, at 10:00 AM, we welcomed participants from diverse fields of endeavor and experience for three online workshops (June 12th, 26th, and July 10th) on his concept of HYBRID TOGETHERNESS, which aims to build a better common future through poetry, fiction, and art.
