Juliann Wang works with collaborators to focus on the beauty and sensitivity of hyper-acoustic instrumentation, drawing listeners into a meditative and evocative realm of Asian fusion and contemporary sound. Bringing musicians into close conversation, the sessions unfold in a dialog of composed and improvised creation that melds familiar structure with sonic poetry to invoke landscapes real and imagined. The evening serves as a moment of unique experience where breath, string, spoken word, and vibration hold sway over nomadic snapshots, taken from ancient tapestries and modern moments, held close in a space between memory and imagining.
Juliann Wang is a Chicago-based multidisciplinary artist, who’s music is an extension of her interdisciplinary practice. Through creation, she redefines the boundaries of music type, establishing a dialogue between freedom, self-discipline, and inner self. The artist uses herself as a carrier of detection and perception, measuring the emotional energy of a specific performance, painting with sound to creating composed yet spontaneous auditory spaces.
Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Select performances have been presented at venues such as Chicago Cultural Center, Anderson Japanese Garden, Experimental Sound Studio, Old Town School of Folk Music, Hyde Park Art Center, and others. Additionally, Juliann released her debut album “Notes in the Wind” in 2023, with sound projects the same year featured in the “Harris Theater Fest: Music + Dance in the Park” at Millennium Park, as a performer/presenter for New Music Chicago’s “Impromptu Fest”, and curating a 16-Channel Listening Experience of the album at Elastic Art Foundation.
