CAPE TEACHING ARTISTRY GARDEN TALK

May 1, 2021 2pm - 4pm

Learn more about CAPE and discuss your teaching artist practices and/or interests and curiosities in becoming a teaching artist!

CAPE and Compound Yellow are co-hosting a Teaching Artist Meet and Greet on May 1st from 2pm to 4pm. Artists are invited to meet CAPE's Associate Director of Education, Joseph Spilberg to learn more about CAPE and discuss their teaching artist practices and/or interests and curiosities in becoming a teaching artist. This will be an informal opportunity for individual and group conversation.

CAPE is currently recruiting artists to teach in an after school program in the city of West Chicago, IL. In CAPE programs, an artist is partnered with a teacher and CAPE supports these two individuals as they co-imagine, co-design and co-teach projects together with students. We support this work of teacher/artist teams through ongoing professional development meetings with other teams of teachers and artists engaged in similar efforts to create a learning hive or Network of teacher and artist researchers/educators. (for more info see: https://capechicago.tumblr.com/)

CAPE partners teachers and artists to engage with students in inquiries about phenomena, identity, community, art making, place making, or whatever other content inspires or intrigues them. CAPE does not create any curriculum, rather we ask the teacher and artist to co-create their own, locally relevant projects where both are experimenting with their own artistic and pedagogical practices.

This Summer CAPE has secured funding for a large-scale summer program at four school sites in West Chicago. West Chicago is a diverse community with an interesting history and a very supportive/open minded school district. Interested artists would have opportunities to potentially continue their teacher/artist partnerships into the Fall of the next school year.

This summer will likely be an in-person scenario as that is what the school district is planning for currently. All CDC guidelines will be closely followed to insure safety of all instructors and participants.
