I See My Light Come Shining + On Second Thought - Performance Installation

Join Us for a Performance and Installation by Spencer Hutchinson

Saturday, October 28, 6pm - 9pm

I See My Light Come Shining is a sound based installation utilizing found objects that addresses the social history of African-Americans’ attempt to climb the “social ladder” and achieve the American Dream. The piece consists of several ladders hung from the east facing wall of the gallery with two found object sculptures. The installation at Compound Yellow marks the third iteration of the installation.

On Second Thought is a performance piece about our relationship to technology viewed through the lens of music. The performance consists of a free standing oscillating fan playing in a duel/duet with professional concert violinist Consuelo Lepauw. The concept is that our relationship to technology has extended to such a degree that the musician's presence is so deeply enmeshed in music technology, beyond the instrument, that the literal voice of the musician gets lost in the digitally altered mix. This is an attempt to create harmony with technology, with the presence of the fan symbolizing technology's ubiquitous presence. Rather than competing with the device, the musician imitates its mechanizations to discover new sonic possibilities
